Women's Mental Health

MENTAL HEALTH FOR WOMEN IN AL, FL & ID.

Because you matter too.

What if you took care of yourself as well as you do everyone else?

So many of us spend our time and energy taking care of everyone and everything but ourselves.

Juggling work, school, family, kids, and societal expectation is hard.   Things like depression, anxiety, OCD, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and perinatal depression make it even harder.

There’s often not much left at the end of the day to take care of yourself, but you matter too.

You deserve to feel comfortable in your own skin and to enjoy the things and people around you.

You deserve a life you love.

I partner with those who have been assigned female at birth as well as those who identify as women, non-binary, or genderqueer to provide specialized psychiatry care throughout all the stages of your life.  Throughout your unique experience, I am there to support you and your mental health. You belong here.

I love working with patients who want to be engaged in their care.  Together we will discuss various treatment options to see what feels best for you.  Then we’ll collaborate going forward to refine the plan until you feel really confident in your care.

Together we’ll work on:

  • We’ll spend your first visit really getting to know each other. We’ll explore what brought you to psychiatry, how you feel about medication, and your priorities for our time together.

From there, we’ll discuss your treatment options and decide what feels best for your and your lifestyle.

  • We’ll meet regularly to continue exploring your mental health - checking in on what’s going on in your life, what’s going well and what may be more of a struggle. We’ll explore different ways to understand and respond in life, and overtime we’ll see what feels good for you.

While medications are often a focus, we may also incorporate thought work, nutrition, movement, sleep habits, and even breath work to help you reach your goals and feel well.

  • During each visit, we’ll discuss your experience with medication and make any adjustments that might help you feel your best. While medications are definitely my area of expertise, you are the expert on your body, your brain, and your life. Your opinion matters and will be an important part of our work together.

FAQS

What others have wondered about women’s mental health

  • PMDD stands for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. It’s a more severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that involves physical and behavioral symptoms such as breast tenderness, bloating, extreme sadness, irritability, anger, and hopelessness that resolve with the onset of menstruation.

  • While some medications should definitely be avoided, most medications we use in psychiatry are considered to be safe during pregnancy & lactation. Of course everything has some level of risk which we try to minimize as much as possible, but pregnancy and postpartum can be a very challenging time for mothers.

Your physical and emotional stability is important on its own, and it’s important to the baby too.

I love working with new or expectant mothers to determine the best course of action for them. We often collaborate with the OBGYN so that everyone is on the same page and you get the best possible care.

  • I don’t typically check hormone levels since that is best managed by an OBGYN.

However, I frequently check things like your blood cells, thyroid hormones, vitamin levels, and iron studies so that we can adjust to help support your mental health.

If I feel like hormone levels may be helpful, we can discuss getting you set up with an OBGYN for a more thorough assessment and treatment.
